The Interpretation of Archaeological Spatial Patterning. E. Kroll and T. Price, eds., Plenum. 1991
Content:
This class focuses on relationships between archaeology and landscape concepts represented in the past and the present. Archaeologists have long studied space and landscapes and, most characteristically, archaeological studies have addressed settlement patterns and other spatial aspects of archaeological data in terms of ecology and geoarchaeology. Landscape has become viewed as an entity that exists by virtue of its being perceived, experienced, and contextualized by people. These aspects of landscape archaeology and their relationships to ethnoarchaeology form the main content of the class. The following will be addressed: 1) critiques of theoretical frameworks that underlie spatial studies; 2) assessments of different types of landscape research used for archaeological interpretation, e.g., for settlement pattern studies or for site formation processes; and 3) case studies of landscape research on particular topics, for example, hunter-gatherers, food producers, and multi-ethnic urban societies, in different geographical regions. The class will be conducted with both lectures and seminar style discussions.
